Creation of the SMS

In November 2022, the Government of Saskatchewan’s Throne Speech introduced the creation of the SMS, a provincial police service with jurisdiction throughout Saskatchewan.

In November 2023, legislation was introduced to lay the creation of the service. The Police (Miscellaneous) Amendment Act, 2023, officially designated the SMS as a police service in Saskatchewan and set out details and processes for the service's structure, operation and governance.

Priorities and Strategy

With a focus on rural and remote crime, SMS priorities include, but are not limited to:

  • gangs;
  • illegal weapons and drugs; and
  • apprehending prolific and high-risk offenders and wanted individuals that pose a public-safety risk.

The SMS will reduce crime through conducting proactive investigations and by providing support to the RCMP, First Nations and municipal police services in the province.

Recruitment and Training

The SMS began recruiting officers in late 2024. The first SMS troop will graduate in June 2025 after eight weeks of training at the Saskatchewan Police College. Recruitment and training will continue to establish a full complement of 70 officers and support staff across Saskatchewan.
