New Recruits
The recruitment process for applicants who have no prior policing experience includes four steps:
1. Testing
Written test and physical test.
2. Application
Personal information, application and personal disclosure form.
3. Interviews
Polygraph, psychological and panel.
4. Job offer
Following an offer of employment, new recruits will complete 25 weeks of paid basic training and field training with an experienced officer.
To qualify to become a Saskatchewan Marshal, applicants will be required to show proof of the following according to the Police Act, 1990 and its regulations:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Successfully completed a Grade 12 education or equivalent;
- Successfully pass a job-related physical test administered by the Saskatchewan Marshals Service;
- Enhanced security screening process and obtain and maintain security clearance as a condition of employment;
- Background checks including a review of previous law enforcement service history and disciplinary history will be required;
- Possess a valid motor vehicle operator license and provide a driver’s abstract obtained within the previous three months which demonstrates a safe and responsible driving record;
- Standard First-Aid Certificate and a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Basic Life Support, Level ‘C’ Certificate within the previous two years;
- Uncorrected visual acuity of 20/60 in both eyes or better, OR 20/40 in one eye and 20/100 in the other eye or better;
- Be required to pass a psychological personality assessment (MMPI) to determine suitability for law enforcement;
- Be certified by a qualified medical practitioner to be in good health, mentally and physically, and fit for duty as a member of a police service; and
- Be of good moral character and habits.
Experienced Officers
The recruitment process for applicants with prior policing experience includes four steps:
1. Application
Personal information, application and personal disclosure form.
2. Interviews
Panel interview and global background check.
3. Requirements
Following an offer of employment, experienced officers will complete eight weeks of paid marshal-specific training.
Experienced officers applying to become a Saskatchewan Marshal must also provide proof they meet the above list of requirements as set out in the Saskatchewan Police Act for new recruits, plus:
- Be a graduate of a recruit training course recognized by the Saskatchewan Police Commission; and
- Have been employed as a member of a police service at a rank of Constable or higher with a police service within Canada, within three years of their application.
